Automated Content Enhancement
Applying natural language processing and standards to automate tasks in learning content management

OiW:Most Innovative Use of Technology Award
For implementation with natural language processing

Eduworks demonstrated the potential to wed the benefits of interoperability and natural language processing to allow content metadata to be harvested automatically.  Capturing this data about content is necessary for multiple purposes. The ACE demonstrator offers the promise of relief from this big headache for educational technologists.  Eduworks is delivering significant achievements using open standards and innovative technologies.

Original Showcase Description:

Eduworks is developing tools that enhance digital content and help automate the creation of standards-based learning.
These tools can add educationally relevant metadata and learning strategies to existing content and the result can be published in SCORM format – without the user entering any metadata or knowing anything about SCORM.

Eduworks software automates many of the processes involved in enterprise learning management, such as matching content to skills or learning objectives, registering content into metadata registries, and checking for terms of use. Eduworks technology relies on natural language processing techniques, most notably latent semantic analysis, and is architected to integrate into existing technologies and content development workflows. It also makes extensive use of specifications and standards such as SCORM 2004, Reusable Competency Definitions, and commonly used enterprise integration standards.

Eduworks technology is currently being tested at the Oregon Center for Applied Science, which develops National Institutes of Health-funded courses on topics such as geriatric care, diversity, and smoking cessation, and in the context of the Advanced Distributed Learning initiative.

DEMONSTRATION: At OpeniWorld:eLearn, Eduworks will showcase development versions of these technologies. The demonstration will feature a Web application that

• Matches course descriptions to skills descriptions
• Automatically generates learning object metadata records at the asset and course level, and
• Finds specific content within a course that addresses a skill.

Eduworks will also demonstrate an innovative tool that can be used to turn existing content into learning modules and courses based on simple instructional designs and learning objectives. This tool presents a visual representation of instructional designs and enables users to

• Search for content by objective,
• Drag and drop content from a local source or repository into a module or course,
• Make small changes to the content (e.g. edit text and rearrange pages)
• Publish the resulting learning modules and courses in SCORM 2004 format (including automatically generated metadata).
